One of the most instructive attacking games in history. Morphy has developed his entire army while the Duke and Count moved their queen repeatedly. Now the position crystallizes into a brilliant finale demonstrating the supreme value of open lines and piece activity.

The Réti Study — Two Passed Pawns

The most famous endgame study ever composed. At first glance, the position seems completely lost for White — Black's pawn is too far advanced and White's king is too far away from both Black's pawn and his own. Yet White can draw with miraculous king geometry.

(Board is near-empty: just two kings and two pawns)

White to move. How does White DRAW — or even WIN?

At first glance, hopeless: Black's h-pawn runs to h1 while White's c-pawn seems too far from queening. The Black king covers c8. White's king is impossibly distant.
SOLUTION: 1. Kg7! (NOT 1.c7? Ka7 and Black queens the h-pawn easily) The key idea: White's king moves along a DIAGONAL that simultaneously threatens BOTH to help the c-pawn queen AND to catch the h-pawn. 1...h4 2. Kf6! (again the miraculous diagonal) 2...Kb6 3. Ke5! (if 2...h3 3.Ke7 h2 4.c7 h1=Q 5.c8=Q+ — draw by perpetual) Now: If 3...Kxc6: 4.Kf4! catches the h-pawn → DRAW If 3...h3: 4.Kd6! h2 5.c7 h1=Q 6.c8=Q+ → DRAW (perpetual check) THE MIRACLE: White's king travels a single diagonal that covers BOTH strategic tasks simultaneously — a geometric paradox. The most celebrated attacking game of the 19th century. Anderssen is conducting a breathtaking attack — he has already sacrificed both rooks. Now, down enormous material, he must find the final precise sequence to force mate. White is missing both rooks and a bishop. His remaining pieces: Queen, two bishops, and some pawns. Find the finishing blow.

After 20.Be7+ the knight must take, allowing 21.Nxg7+ forking King and Rook, and 22.Bc7# delivers a bishop checkmate — the bishop coming from c4 via e6 in an alternate line if Black tries 21...Ke7 instead. The position where White is down BOTH rooks and a queen yet delivers checkmate remains one of the most startling in chess history. Kieseritzky reportedly called the game "the beautiful play of the dead" — before realizing he was the one who had lost.

Tal plays a rook sacrifice that is, by engine analysis, objectively unsound — yet Smyslov could not find the refutation over the board in time. This puzzle tests your ability to navigate chaotic positions the way Tal intended: not with certainty, but with practical difficulty.

White to move. Find Tal's shocking practical sacrifice — note that it is NOT objectively best, but maximally difficult for a human defender.

However, Capablanca finds the most precise technical route to victory, demonstrating the principle of the "active king" in the endgame. This puzzle asks you to find the winning plan — not a single move, but a strategic concept.

Game 16 of the 1985 World Championship. Kasparov plays a long-term positional exchange sacrifice — giving up a rook for a bishop — to achieve a dominating position with his dark-squared bishop and pawns. The position becomes an instructive example of long-term compensation for material. The puzzle asks: find the sacrifice and explain the compensation.

This study was rated by endgame composers as an example of "the paradoxical first move."

Thirteen-year-old Bobby Fischer produces what Hans Kmoch called "the game of the century." Black has just played the startling 17...Be6!!, offering the queen. Now Fischer must cash in — two bishops, open lines, and a hopelessly exposed White king are the compensation.

The Smothered Mate is one of chess's most beautiful patterns: a knight delivers checkmate to a king "smothered" by its own pieces. A queen sacrifice forces the king into the fatal corner. This is the purest form of the pattern, known since Greco's manuscripts of 1620.

RECOGNITION: Smothered mate needs a knight within two moves of the mating square and the king surrounded by its own heavy pieces in a corner.

Torre's Windmill — The Perpetual Attack
Carlos Torre vs. Emanuel Lasker · Moscow, 1925 · ★★★★☆

Carlos Torre, 21, executes one of the most celebrated attacking sequences in history against World Champion Lasker. The "Windmill" is a series of alternating discovered checks and captures — a bishop gives check while the rook devours Black's material, move after move.

White (Torre): Kg1, Qg4, Re7, Bg5, Ne4
Black (Lasker): Kg8, Qh5, Ra8, Rc8, Ba6, Nd5 — queen is now out of play

The Double Bishop Sacrifice — Bxh7+ followed by Bxg7+ — is one of chess's most powerful attacking patterns. First demonstrated definitively by Lasker against Bauer (1889). When both bishops can sacrifice on h7 and g7, the queen and knight coordinate to deliver a mating attack against the exposed kingside.

Position — White has just played 1.Bxh7+, Black replied 1...Kxh7:

White: Kg1, Qd1, Ra1, Rf1, Bg5(!), Nf3, Ne4
Black: Kh7, Qc7, Ra8, Rf8, Be7, Nd7, Nf6

White to move. Execute the second sacrifice and prove soundness.

The Trébuchet is the purest form of mutual zugzwang — a position where whoever moves LOSES. Both kings and pawns are locked in a perfect standoff: each side wishes the other would move first. The player who can FORCE the opponent to move into the position wins.

Trébuchet Setup:

Black: Ke7, Pe5 — MUTUAL ZUGZWANG

Both sides in zugzwang. Who moves loses. Analyze both sides.
SOLUTION — Mutual Zugzwang Analysis: IF WHITE TO MOVE (White loses): 1. Kf5? Kd6! → White's pawn falls → Black queens → Black wins 1. Ke6? Ke8! → Black takes opposition; holds easily 1. e5? Kd7! → Black's king goes to e7; promotes → Black wins IF BLACK TO MOVE (Black loses): 1...Kf7 2.Kd5! Nimzowitsch created "the immortal zugzwang game" — a position where his opponent had NO useful moves left. Every pawn and piece was locked; White was in zugzwang with the entire army still on the board. Nimzowitsch reportedly stood on his chair and shouted — then won by total strangulation.

White (Sämisch): Kg1, Qd3, Ra1, Rb1, Bc1, Nd1 — all pieces locked!

How did Nimzowitsch engineer this total paralysis?
SOLUTION — Nimzowitsch's Blockade Principles (from "My System", 1925): The total zugzwang was reached through a 35-move campaign: PRINCIPLE 1 — THE BLOCKADE: Place pieces (especially knights) directly in front of opponent's pawns. Stops the pawn AND creates an outpost. PRINCIPLE 2 — OVERPROTECTION: Protect key squares with MORE defenders than strictly necessary. Attacks become impossible to execute. PRINCIPLE 3 — PROPHYLAXIS: Move to prevent opponent's plan BEFORE it materializes. Nimzowitsch stopped every White kingside break early. FINAL POSITION ANALYSIS: • White's queenside pawns (a2/b2/c3) all blocked by Black's pawns • White's pieces have no useful moves without worsening position • White's king: stuck on g1 with no good square • Result: any White move makes the position immediately worse Sämisch spent 20 minutes on his final moves, unable to find anything useful. SOLUTION: 1. Nxd5! (fork setup — must take with queen to avoid piece loss) 1...Qxd5 (if 1...exd5? 2.Qxd7! wins the queen outright) 2. Qb4!!
